October is the time to start planning for the Boston Public Schools (BPS) for the upcoming school year. Most families should start by applying for K1 (for children who will be four years old by September 1). Your chances of getting your school choices are better if you register before the end of January, so you’ll want to visit schools in November and December. You can learn about your school options by visiting the DiscoverBPS website.
Visit Schools: The most important step families can take when considering the Boston Public Schools is to visit schools, and to meet the staff and families. An in-person visit is the only way to appreciate the warm and supportive school communities; the strength of the teaching and leadership teams; and the many unique aspects of each school.
Discover BPS: For kindergarten and elementary schools, the options available to families are determined by where the student lives. The first step in choosing the Boston Public Schools (BPS) is to visit the DiscoverBPS website. Discover BPS is a school search engine that helps parents understand where their children are eligible to go to school, and provides detailed information about each school. Enter your child’s address, school year, and other information. The site will provide a list of the schools available for the address, grade level, and other needs you have entered.
See the Kindergarten & Elementary Schools page of this site for more information about K-8 schools.
See the Secondary Schools page of this site for information on schools that cover grades 7 to 12.
