Downtown Schools Night will be held Thursday, November 21st, 2019 from 7:00-8:30 PM at Hill House, 74 Joy Street, Boston. Learn more about Boston’s excellent public schools, from families with children in those schools. This discussion will focus on nearby public elementary schools, with families sharing their views and experiences with their school. We currently expect to discuss six schools: the Hurley and Blackstone (South End), Quincy (Chinatown), Eliot (North End), and Harvard-Kent and Warren-Prescott (Charlestown) schools.
This event will be of most interest to families with children who will be 4 or 5 by September 1, 2020. The number of places for K1 (pre-school) for 4-year-olds has been expanded, though places are still difficult to get as most go to siblings. The odds of obtaining a K2 (5-year-old kindergarten) seat at good nearby schools have improved significantly in recent years, as the schools have expanded their K2 programs, and the Home-Based school assignment plan places children in their nearby schools.
Families’ school options vary depending on where they live and the grade the child is entering. If you’re considering choosing Boston Public Schools, it will be helpful for you to explore your specific school options at the DiscoverBPS website. (The data on the website is usually updated for the new school year around November 1st.) Interested families should visit schools in November or December, and submit their school preferences in January or February. (See Registering for BPS for more information, as it becomes available.)
The most important step families can take when considering the Boston Public Schools is to visit schools, and to meet the staff and families. An in-person visit is the only way to appreciate the warm and supportive school communities; the strength of the teaching and leadership teams; and the many unique aspects of each school. See this post for information about BPS School Previews and the School Showcase.
